The kitchen originally had a very typical stainless steel, overmount sink with white laminate countertops.  There was a trash compactor to the right, and a raised area behind the sink.  We cut down the raised area to make one  continuous surface, installed an updated sink and faucet, and the picture on the right shows the new wine cooler where the garbage disposer used to be.

This remodel involved more than just the kitchen.  The entrance, breakfast area, powder bathroom, utility room, and gym area all had the same smaller 8x8 tiles on the floor as the kitchen.  We removed those and installed these 18x18 tiles.

One thing that really brightened up the room was the removal of the above light box and the installation of a series of recessed can lights instead.  This spreads the light out around the room.  We also added puck lighting underneath the cabinets and rope lighting above them, where we had removed the furdown you can see above.
