The kitchen originally had a small vent above the cooktop with venting that went up through the cabinets.  We removed that and the cabinets above and installed this custom vent hood.

 The two pictures to the left show perfectly how great a different it makes to remove the furdown and those hanging cabinets.  The room feels so much bigger without that barrier there.  And the clients did not lose cabinet space because we were able to install the taller cabinets in the corner, where there used to be a window.  These photos also show the new French doors leading to the gym area, replacing a standard door and a window that were originally there.

Here is a similar picture taken from the back side.  Without the upper cabinets, and with the bar cut down six inches, the area looks much larger and there is a lot more work space around the sink.  We also removed the chair rail in the breakfast area when we pulled the wallpaper, but we added crown molding, which you can see below.
