We turned this basement area into a media room.  Replacing this wood flooring with the dark tile shown below and to the right really changed the feel of the basement.

Part of the conversion included removing the wall shown to the left and running the tile straight into the opening, enlarging the  room significantly.  We also added window treatments, a second exterior door, and new paint.
